My Home State of California is on Fire—And Newsom & Bass Are Fueling the Flames

California, my beloved home state—the place where I was born and raised, where I built my dreams, where I fell in love with its beauty and promise—is burning, and it feels personal. And no, I’m not just talking about the literal flames that tore through Pacific Palisades. I’m talking about the fiery ineptitude of Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, whose lack of leadership has turned a natural disaster into a tragic display of political incompetence.

For me, this isn’t just another news story. California is personal. It’s where I grew up, performed my first songs, and built my dreams. Seeing the state I love reduced to chaos by failed leadership breaks my heart. The Pacific Palisades fires are just the latest reminder that California’s once-glorious reputation as the Golden State has been tarnished by decades of mismanagement, bloated bureaucracy, and misplaced priorities.

Where’s the Accountability, Gavin?

Governor Gavin Newsom has made it abundantly clear that he’s more interested in building his national profile than actually governing California. Under his watch, wildfires have become as predictable as a Hollywood reboot. Yet, instead of addressing the root causes, Newsom continues to blame climate change while ignoring the decades of poor forest management and environmental policies that have turned California into a tinderbox.

California’s forests are suffocating under dead trees and overgrown brush, thanks to ridiculous red tape that prevents effective forest management. Controlled burns? Good luck getting through the endless environmental reviews. Newsom loves to tout California’s “green” initiatives, but his policies have left us anything but.

Meanwhile, billions of taxpayer dollars that could have been spent on fire prevention are wasted on flashy, failed green energy projects and social experiments. The Pacific Palisades fires serve as a tragic reminder that virtue signaling won’t save lives—failed leadership and misplaced priorities did this.

Karen Bass: Unprepared and Out of Her Depth

And then there’s Karen Bass, LA’s new mayor, who seems more focused on making headlines than making real change. Whether it’s homelessness, crime, or wildfires, Bass’s leadership has been nothing short of underwhelming.

When the Pacific Palisades fires broke out, residents were left asking, “Where’s the leadership?” Evacuation plans were unclear, communication was scattered, and resources were stretched thin. Bass campaigned on promises to tackle LA’s crises, but when faced with a real emergency, her response was as predictable as it was inadequate: more talk, little action.

Firefighters in Los Angeles are some of the most hardworking and heroic individuals you’ll find, but they’re being overworked and underfunded. Meanwhile, the city’s leadership continues to prioritize nonsensical initiatives over basic public safety. Let’s not forget, Bass stepped into her role with promises of sweeping reform, but so far, her results have been disappointing.

The Bigger Picture: California in Decline

The Pacific Palisades fires are not just a localized disaster—they’re a symptom of California’s broader decline. The state that gave us innovation, beauty, and opportunity has become a cautionary tale of what happens when leadership fails. From wildfires to homelessness to water shortages, California’s leaders have repeatedly chosen politics over progress.

Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass are more interested in playing to their national audiences than rolling up their sleeves and fixing the messes at home. The result? A state that’s burning—both literally and figuratively—while its leaders spin PR campaigns to distract from their failures.

What Needs to Change

It doesn’t have to be this way. California can rise again, but it’s going to take real leadership. Here’s what needs to happen:

  • Invest in Fire Prevention: Stop the endless virtue signaling and start funding controlled burns, forest management, and firebreaks. Preventing fires is cheaper and far less destructive than fighting them.
  • Streamline Bureaucracy: Cut the red tape that makes it nearly impossible for communities to clear brush and prepare for fire season. Let the experts do their jobs without interference.
  • Focus on Public Safety: Reallocate resources to firefighters, emergency response teams, and critical infrastructure instead of wasting money on failed social experiments.
  • Hold Leaders Accountable: Californians deserve transparency and results. If elected officials fail, it’s time to vote them out—period.

California Deserves Better

For someone like me, who grew up loving the beauty and promise of this state, it’s devastating to see California go up in flames—both literally and figuratively. The Pacific Palisades fires are just the latest reminder that Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass are more interested in political theater than actually leading.

California deserves better, and it’s up to us to demand real change. It’s time to hold these leaders accountable and reclaim the Golden State’s greatness. It deserves leaders who prioritize action over rhetoric, solutions over slogans, and accountability over blame. Until we get that, the Golden State will continue its slow burn into mediocrity.

As someone who still believes in the potential of this great state, I say enough is enough. Californians must demand real leadership that puts the safety and prosperity of the people first.

It’s time to save California before it’s too late.
